Menekşe ile Halil: A Leap into the Sublime!

"Menekşe ile Halil" is just about another masterpiece where Kivanç Tatlitug has the lead role, a responsibility that he fulfilled simply brilliantly.

This should come as no surprise, knowing the qualified potential of this young yet so professional actor. Kivanç has indeed proved once more that he is endowed with talent and that he is inherently capable of artistic accomplishment.

The story is quite original, in the sense that it does not fall into the category of classical love stories. It is about a sweet, tender, beautiful romance which is even very close to transcendental love if we dare say so. The kind of love between the partners is so profound, strong, yet pure and almost spiritual. This might sound a bit unusual in a contemporary world, yet Kivanç's acting skills succeeded in conveying such human and universal feelings so splendidly. His amazing (and so professinal) facial expressions, the intensity of his look, his incredible emotional sensibility, his mastery of different moods, all managed to uplift the viewer and take him to a world of stirring emotions where etrenal love and ever-lasting peace prevail.

The whole story is in fact based on an oscillatory cycle which alternates sadness and joyfulness successively in a melodramatic way. What is stiking throughout the series is again Kivanç' performance, as he manages to switch from romance to anger, or sadness or fight so easily and naturally. His tears would fall and you wouldn't be able to hold back yours. In particular, and besides the sentimenal moments that he played, some scenes are also mind-blowing like when he kept running for a long long distance (when he discovered that his girlfriend got married) or when he fell on his knees, crying so desperately and recalling the little kid that he was and who still misses his beloved mom. Those two scenes, and many more, display a tormented soul, broken and ravaged by the injustices of life, the soul of such a delicate, sensitive, loving, and generous human being.

This magical dimension in Menekşe ile Halil is definitely what makes the series so special. The reincarnation of the hero into an angel in the final scenes is not only touching and profoundly moving, it is highly suggestive as well. Values and feelings come to acquire a wholly new meaning and to be made purer, deeper, and more genuine. In this process, though, distinguished thanks should go to Kivanç in the first place for having grasped the message of the series so finely, and transmitting it to us in such a beautiful, super, and captivating way!!! Chapeau bas, Kivanç Tatlitug!!!

I watched all episodes on kanal D and they are available on videotivi too; I wonder why u can't find the lat two, it's weird... anyway try again this way:

Go to this link: http://www.videotivi.com/videolar/?kategori=Dizi%20Film

You should open the links with Internet Explorer, not Mozilla
If it still doesn't work , go to the main page here http://www.videotivi.com/default.asp and click on "Dizi Film" (it's in orange, the second on the left). U will then have a small box with "Dizi Seçin" still in orange; click on the arrow and select Menekse ile Halil; u will find all episodes and u don't need to register

I agree with you Natalo, although I did'nt have a chance to watch all,but I watched enough to decide how amazing is this serie,I hope That mbc will show it,Kivanc was excellent ..I felt that I was watching a piece in theatre...the best scene was when Halil found out that Menekse is married...that took my imagination to the very old arab love story kaiss&laila..when Kaiss found out that Laila was married he run into the sahara screaming her name and lost his reason ...spirital, sacred, love beyond the reason!Laila also died of the suffering!... the funniest thing we could understand everything without undersatnding Turkish..lool!that because we share the same culture!the songs weere excellent they make you cry even if you don't understan a word....very impressing indeed!

Hi Layla

Thank u so much for this insightful reply dear

Yes, absolutely, the acting is so close to u in the manner of a theatrical performance; Kvanç was beyond description; the scene that u mentioned was a very strong one, but I'm sure u will like another one which features the man and the boy at the same time through the flashback technique.. this one was one of a kind; it left me speechless...

U're also right about the similarities btw the Turkish and the Arab cultures; he gestures, the manners, the traditions, some of the words, the intonation, the music, the hot temper, the deep feelings... everything is there to make us understand it without necessarily mastering the language!! The acting skills are of such a good quality, i must say, that, of course, one can be only impressed!!!

I can't wait to watch his next series; I'm becoming Kivançoholic looooool

I think he was crying for "real"...yes he was acting but since he is a good actor he lives the scene before interpreting it!that;s his secret i think.and a result of a hard work....he acts so you think it's real...thats what makes art so wonderful!either a painting that makes you cry or scene that makes you cry...he just succeded in expressing his emotions to the public...and i m pretty sure that he is a person that does not talk much he expresses emotions more

OMG Layla, that would be awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I'm sure he works hard on each scene, and he grasps the essence of the character to the max.. Besides, he is so gifted mashallah, which makes me think that he does live the moment as u say, and does cry for real! Woooow, that would be stupendous!! In any case, he trasmits the emotions so well, and this is why he is quaified as a good artist. He's got the soul for everything, and the means to communicate it. God bless!!!!!!!!

Hey Elsa! It's really him who did the stunt. Because he's such a great swimmer, the director let him do so. Just before coming to Dubai, he was shooting the last episode where Halil jumped from the bridge and he had to do the jump at least five times for the shooting. He said so in an interview!

Hi Natalo and Layla; well Hi to all of you:)

I agree, The character of Halil is SOOOOOO well prepared that sometimes I cried with/for him (ok ok almost all the time). However I didnt like Sedef's interpretation of Menekse, she didnt equal Kivanc interpretation and passion (maybe I compared her to Songul. she was passionate and outstanding in Gumus). I was sometimes yielling at her 'come on girl mooooooove it mooooove it' lol. I dont know; something in her eyes was still and her smile didnt reach them ummm

Keep up the good word Kivanc
May Allah bless you

see you all

Hi Laila!probably all laila s think the same looool!you are right about Sedef but since i saw her just in 1 role in that serie i don;t know if she was playing the character or she was not doing a good interpretation..it is very hard to know..because i think she played a naive girl that sure did love halil but her passion was not on the same level as his..that's why a lot of times we felt that she was indifferent to his love ..so love not on the same level...you can not compare her to Gumus because it was a completely different role..and sedef was naive but tough...she is very beautiful though..hahhah we are becoming experts in film critics....!see what kivanc did to us....:)

Hi Laila and welcome! :)
Hi my other Laila too :)

Well, I have a different opinion girls:

I think that Sedef' role was meant to be like that; her facial expression which is placid and serene is meant to reflect the purity of that somehow "transcendental love"; notice that there is not much kissing for example; the whole is done and transmitted on a level that goes beyond the actual setting... What confirms this in my opnion is the fact that she is endowed with outstanding patience and maturity (see how she managed to make all the family be on her side and support Halil...); so maybe what seems "naive" is meant to translate very deep emotions and values...

Concerning Songul, it's quite the opposite for me Laila loooool; I really wanted to yell at her and tell her "Hell, try to sustain his look at least once! move it! stop being hesitant! go to him and FLIRT with him as he gently does" looool; I don't know, but I felt that he the one being passionate and positively aggressive in his love; she seemed too passive to me...

But u know what girls? I do think that no matter who played with Kivanç, he'll always have a step beyond them, simply because he is so professional and because he has one of those souls that would reach u no matter what... His interpretation of his roles is so strong that u would have eyes only for him and be left unsatisfied with others...

God bless him, and thank u girls for the great replies!!!

Seriously Natalo you should look into writing movie reviews. You have a gift, give it some thought, I think you would go far with it and its very easy to start.

Definitely a fantastic series, I thoroughly enjoyed it, even though I couldn't understand the spoken language, the universal message was loud and clear.

He did a great job, no doubt, and definitely the love was a very spiritual and pure love. Even their displays of affection were so modest in comparison to gumus. Why do you think that was? I don't know why I assumed it had something to do with the fact that Sedef is married, not sure why the director decided to keep it that clean. None the less i appreciated it.

Interesting that you interpreted the final scene to be a reincarnation. I felt it was more like a symbol of his freedom, finally being able to relax and break free of the shackles of this life and reaching his fresh start in the after life.

Loool Nancy, I guess u are the one who should do so!! Your comments are just amazing!! :)

I love what u say about the "universal message" because decidedly, yes, it is one!! And this in fact answers your question about the quasi absence of physical love display... I think that the whole script is conceived in that pure, transcendental dimension, just to make the message stronger and more far-reaching. It is more about values than actual daily life (although the two do overlap); and I think that this is where the stength of the series resides, coz despite such absence, u come to feel those hidden manifestations so thoroughly, which is quite sensational!!!

Concerning the final scene, I find a similarity between it and the movie Ghost where the hero comes back as an angel after his death and is there to support his belovd... . But I do like your interpretation as well; it makes a lot of sense too. Yet in any case, that was a veryyyy sad end, and when it' over, u feel that your life is soooo trivial and devoid of meaning!! And this is proof enough that the series does not leave u indifferent; far from it!!! :)

haha...i did a subject in uni called "cinema studies" one of the best subjects... was never able to watch another movie again without "over analyzing" lol a lil bit of a disadvantage if I do say so.

makes sense regarding the display of affection.. it was a refreshing change and you felt the intensity between them regardless.

so Natalo, are you studying? raised in the west? I am assuming you are.

Hi Natalo,
You're right my dear let's keep our mental healthy lol.
WEll I didnt change my mind Sedef, even if the charcater has to show genuine and pure love, though in some situations she has to show some passion too. for i.e when she found out he was still married to Zeyneb, come oooooooooooon even a shy/pure/whatever you want girl would have shown more emotions than Sedef did. She was jealous too, well, did I feel it in her eyes/actions...? nope... I dont know if it's her first time acting or what but her character didnt change the way I was expecting it to...

Even my hubby found her a little bit cold...lol

kisses

lol Laila

Maybe u're right, but I guess that these were the "instructions" of the director: no explicit display of passion; it's on purpose in order to make his message about human values and pure love pass... I even think that she was chosen for the role thanks to the features of her face: very calm and serene, almost "cold" as some would think, but i don't think it is coldness :)

And by the way girls, Menekse means "Viloet", and "Viloet" in the languge of flowers represents shyness, modesty, innocence, purity and symbolizes secret love. So I think this confirms the choice of the script writer and the director to keep a discrete display of love...
